Explain it to Santorum

I’ve seen this around the web in a few places, and so far I haven’t been able to find the original source (but if I do, I’ll be sure to update this page with the correct info).

But it is a great way to explain to “Man on Dog” Santorum and others who feel the same way:

One thing about panel four (the one about who has the authority to recognize marriages)… There is a long list of people and organizations that can perform marriage, most of whom fall outside of that the anti-gay-marriage folks find acceptable:

  • Your church
  • Churches outside of your denomination but inside your religion
  • Judges and Justices of the Peace
  • Mayors
  • Places authorized to perform marriage in states you don’t live in
  • Places authorized to perform marriages in countries you don’t live in
  • Churches of other religions
  • Ship captains
  • The couple involved (common law marriage)
  • Elvis impersonators (mostly in Vegas)

Only the first one or two are marriages as defined by the specific religion(s) that are opposed to gay marriage, the rest (the vast majority) are not actually recognized by the religion.  And yet, those other marriages exist, and they are recognized by our government as real, legal marriages.

The narrow definition espoused by Santorum falls short of the widely accepted definitions of marriage.
